藏香猪是世界上少有的高原小型猪品种，能适应恶劣的高寒气候，可终年放牧，在严冬季节补充少量精料，管理比较粗放。藏香猪皮薄，出肉率高，瘦肉率可达52%以上。因此，较适合气候恶劣的地区饲养。

成年巴马香猪一般体重在40公斤左右，身高50厘米左右，体长和胸围各100厘米左右。

头轻小、嘴细长，从前额到鼻盘平而无明显皱纹，身小而薄，背腰稍凹，胸宽圆，腹部下垂，乳头为5~7对。那常养殖场的巴马香猪毛色为两头黑、中间白，部分背部有少许黑斑，额头有一倒三角形白斑或白线。

巴马香猪性成熟较早，母香猪初次发情一般在120天左右，发情周期为18天，妊娠期111天，产后62天发情。初生仔香猪体重约为450克，20日龄约2公斤，60日龄断奶为10公斤左右。
