脲芽孢八叠球菌属,革兰氏阳性，具少数鞭毛运动，芽孢圆形(直径0.5～1.5 μm)，是球菌中能形成芽孢的菌。化能异养菌，严格好氧，在营养琼脂上的细胞为乳酪色到橙色菌落。嗜盐芽孢八叠球菌(S. halophila)生长需要除30%NaCl之外，还要0.5%MgCl2；能在15～37℃生长。广泛分布于土壤包括盐池。
