丁香假单胞细菌把“结冰“当成攻击植物的手段。在温度较高的时候,细菌能够激发蛋白质“造冰”,以冻坏植物,窃取它们所需的养分。当细菌感染植物后,它们会以颗粒的形式飞入空气里,同时形成冰晶进行传播并繁衍,这也就是人们看到的降雪。当冰晶在空中融化并落下,就是人们看到的雨水。而且,细菌能在气温高于0度时造雪的功能,显然是灰尘和煤烟所不具备的。科学家还相信,除了丁香假单胞菌,应该还有其他细菌甚至真菌具有降雪的功能。
